HBO’s adaption of the Tigerbelly Shirt Apart from…,I will love this revered graphic novel Watchmen debuted to decidedly mixed reviews when it first aired last October, and if the Emmy Awards were held in any other year, this category probably would have been a tight race between Mrs. America and Little Fires Everywhere, with Unorthodox emerging as a possible dark horse. But Watchmen has only grown in power during the coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests, particularly with the startling prescience of its Tulsa Race Massacre episode. (In an undeniably canny move, HBO made the show available for free to nonsubscribers during the Juneteenth weekend.) With its 26 nominations, the most of any show this year, and with its creator, Damon Lindelof, already saying there will not be a second season, Watchmen seems to have a clear path to victory in this category. But this is one race that almost any of the nominees could win, given the strengths of each of the five shows. (Meanwhile, the best-actress contest between Regina King and Cate Blanchett, both Oscar winners, is definitely one to watch. Blanchett gave an almost eerily empathetic performance as Phyllis Schlafly, but King is the odds-on favorite to take home her fourth Emmy.) Will win: Watchmen. Should win: Mrs. America. Might pull an upset: Unorthodox.
